WHY SHOULD YOU HAVE A PREGNANCY MASSAGE?
Pregnancy brings about significant changes in a woman’s body. As it is carrying a new life, its work load is increased, which can result in fatigue and pain. The lungs experience a 30 to 40 percent increase in air intake, putting further stress on the chest and neck muscles. The heart increases blood flow by 30 to 50 percent. As the uterus grows, the stomach, intestines and diaphragm are pushed upwards, and the stomach also adapts to handle an increased food intake. Urine production surges as the kidney’s blood flow increases by 35 percent, raising filtering function by 40 percent. As a result, urine leakage can become common as the bladder is pressured by the growing uterus.
Furthermore, the lower back will start to feel sore as the belly grows, especially as the curve of the lower back is increased and pressure is heightened on joints and bones. Lastly, ligaments become looser, which can result in less stable joints when Relaxin – a hormone that occurs during pregnancy – is produced in the body.
With so much going on in your body, you’re bound to feel tired, sore and in need of some pampering relief. A pregnancy massage is the perfect answer, as it offers a wealth of other benefits as well.
The Benefits
Not only is pregnancy massage a wonderfully relaxing experience, it can provide much needed relief on a deeper level.
A massage can:
• Provide stress relief for weight bearing joints, such as the lower back, pelvis and ankles.
• Increase blood circulation and help reduce stress, which can stabilise blood pressure.
• Increase oxygen and nutrients to both mother and baby. More nutrients are delivered to the baby, and the mother will feel more energised as well.
• Eliminate toxins from the body and decrease fatigue.
• Stabilise hormone levels.
• Provide relief for headaches, backaches, swelling, sore feet, stiff joints, and
sciatica.
• Encourage proper posture, helping to prevent future postural imbalances.
• Relax the mind and body. This results in better sleep, and a healthier and happier mother.
Assisting with Childbirth and Beyond
Pregnancy massage can also help to facilitate an easier childbirth and postpartum care.
It will:
• Increase flexibility of muscles, allowing for an easier birth.
• Relax the pelvis. This can sometimes assist with the rotation of a breech presentation..
• Speed up recovery postpartum, for both vaginal childbirth and caesareans.
• Create more milk production as tension in the body is reduced. This will facilitate easier breast feeding.
Qualified Therapists for Peace of Mind
When it comes to pregnancy massage, you need the hands of a trained specialist. Pregnant women have different needs than those who are not pregnant; therefore they require certain care and attention that only a trained and qualified masseuse can give. Many standard massage therapists perform pregnancy massages without specialised training or certification. This can be potentially harmful to both mother and baby, as standard therapists will not know which points of the body to avoid during the massage and which pressures areas should be adjusted.
Positioning During Pregnancy
Pregnancy massages are vastly different from standard massages, starting from how you are positioned before the massage even begins. There are two common positions – side-lying and semi-reclining.
These positions are comfortable for the mother and are also safe for the baby. When you are 22 weeks pregnant, it is harmful to lie on your back, as the weight of your baby can increase the pressure on the deep blood vessels in your abdomen. This can reduce blood circulation to you and your baby and cause a feeling of dizziness and discomfort for the mother. Lying on your side or semi-reclining during a massage offers better support for the baby while ensuring both mother and baby are safe.
Using treatment tables with holes have seen women experience pelvic instability and spirrius labour due to ligaments being stretched in abnormal ways. Belly's are in the way for a reason!
