** I strongly recommend you plan to keep your placenta, whether or not you ultimately choose to have it encapsulated. You want to keep your options open. The sooner you process the placenta after birth, the fresher and more potent it will be and it will help you get through those first transitional weeks, when your hormones are imbalanced and you are establishing breastfeeding. But delaying the decision to encapsulate your baby’s placenta is still far better than not having that choice anymore! **

The process of ingesting the placenta has been undertaken over the history of mammals, evolution seems to be providing us with a valuable birth recovery source as we enter an era where our food sources are increasingly and chemically processed.
The process of processing the placenta into a ground powder has been used for thousands of years by Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) doctors.
Dried Human Placenta is also known as zi he chi in TCM.
At Butterfly Beginnings, we offer a variety of placenta services in Melbourne that include placenta encapsulation also known as placenta pills or placenta capsules. There are also other services provided to make placenta tinctures, placenta skin care, placenta artwork and more.
The placenta is one of our favourite conversational points as the history for different traditions in cultures around the world are never ending. From burial to protect from evil spirits to burial as respect for the baby's life to bring goodwill. Some cultures hang the placentas' in the trees at birth and at the death of that human being is buried at the foot of the tree as a symbol of being reconnected to the circle of life.
It is becoming a popular theory that human placentaphagia is an evolutionary process for us, as human beings.
One of my personal favourite benefits all mums and dads seem to report is the absence or barely noticeable effects of the 3 day baby blues that normally occur between days 2 to 5 and still a continued supply increase at this point. ;o)

Placentophagia:
The Benefits of Consuming the Placenta
What is placentophagia?
Placentophagia is the process of a new mother consuming her placenta postpartum by either eating the placenta raw, cooked, in capsule form or drinking the juices from the placenta once it is cooked.
The Publicly Reported Effects of Ingesting Placenta (Placentaphagia) After Birth.
Ingesting placenta pills after birth has been reported to be useful for a new mother’s well-being and in longer term cases for use with supporting well-being through menstrual cycles. It offers the following reported benefits:
Iron- Women naturally lose a significant amount of blood after childbirth. Low iron often results in fatigue, lower hormone levels, lack of concentration and depression. Studies have shown that women with postpartum depression benefit greatly from iron supplements. As placenta is rich in iron, placenta pills are therefore excellent for this purpose.
Pain Relief- Placenta has been reported to increase the effectiveness of opioids. This means that the mother would need to take much less pain medication to reach the same desired pain management. Furthermore, women suffering from swelling, high blood pressure and protein in the urine find that consuming their placenta postpartum can help soothe the kidneys, resolving symptoms more quickly.
Lactation- In a recent study, 86% of women reported an increase in milk production within 4 days of consuming placenta. It is especially beneficial for mothers who have experienced toxemia or preeclampsia during pregnancy, as they may find that their milk is slow to come in. Consuming placenta immediately after birth will help; however, research is still being done to find out exactly which hormones in the placenta help support human milk supply. So far the studies have show 0xytocin and lactogen hormones within the placenta tissue to be contributing factors.
Hormone Stabilization- Placenta contains hormones to assist in treating and preventing postpartum depression. Placenta produces stress-fighting hormones during the pregnancy, but once it leaves the body, it may take months for hormones to be stabilised within the body and brain.
This is a period where mothers can be prone to depressive symptoms. However, when you ingest placenta after birth, you can reintroduce these vital hormones and nutrients back into the body.

Placenta Encapsulation Methods
1. Raw Encapsulation Method
RAW Placenta Encapsulation skips the heating process altogether. This method of preparation involves cleaning the placenta and then dehydrating the placenta before it is ground and put into capsules, otherwise known as placenta pills. Placenta capsules made with this method provide a burst of energy up front and great hormone stabilisation.
2. TCM Encapsulation Method
TCM Placenta Encapsulation is inspired by Traditional Chinese Medicine. This method of preparation involves cleaning the placenta, gently heating it through steam, and then dehydrating the placenta before it is ground and put into capsules.
Your unique blend of Traditional Chinese Herbs can be added to boost your personal blend and increase your quantity of capsules. Using this preparation is thought to bring out the placenta’s healing properties. (This can be done through your own Chinese Medicine practitioner or one affiliated with Butterfly Beginnings)
3. 1/2 RAW ½ TCM Placenta Encapsulation Method
This method is becoming more and more popular among women seeking to have their placentas encapsulated. This is done by us, as experienced placenta service specialists in being able to understand how to prepare the placenta carefully to provide two separate labelled bottles of placenta pills to you, so that you know which ones are prepared for you using the Raw encapsulation method and which one has been prepared using the TCM encapsulation method.
The reported benefits of this ½ ½ way are to utilise the immediate benefits of balancing out your body gently in the first week of the postnatal period using the TCM placenta capsules and then to also benefit from the stronger hormones and nutrients of the RAW placenta pills especially beyond the 6 week period and when menstrual cycles commence again.
